bird watching at carry farm

Carry Farm has an abundant population of wild birds and a diversity of species from the common Oystercatcher to the lesser known Red-breasted Merganser, all helped by the range of habitats to be found on the farm. The call of the Cuckoo in the spring time is an increasingly rare sound in the UK, and the hollow tap of woodpeckers can be heard as you walk along the fringes of the woodland.

The coastline to the north and east of Carry Farm is an important refuge for waders and seabirds, providing feeding, resting and drying-out areas. The greatest aggregation of seabirds and waders are found on the island besides the Carry Buoy above high water. This forms an important loafing area for the birds, away from dogs, people, and other potential predators or threats. Gannets are frequently flying past the farm and diving for fish. Many of the seabirds and waders to be found at Carry Farm are of conservation concern, and we are fortunate they are attracted to our shores.

Owls love Carry Farm and you don’t have to listen too hard to hear the variety of calls between them in the evening. They have even been known to sit on the lodge balcony railings whilst they ponder their next move, so have those cameras ready!

The open grassland provides the ideal habitat for the meadow pipits and little egrets and herons are frequent visitors to our ditches and water courses.
